THE ASSOCIAZIONE PER IL CONCORSO DI PIANOFORTE
announces the

30th Piano Competition

In its 13th International Edition
Prize "Rodolfo Caporali"

 

RULES AND REGULATIONS

 

Article 1. 

The competition will be held in Sulmona from 8th to 14th September 2008 and is open to the pianists of all nationalities born after 8th September 1973.

 

Article 2. 

The competition will be articulated into three parts all of which are public: a preliminary audition, a second audition, and a final audition. At least 7 candidates of the second audition will be admitted to the final audition. In addition the winners of a Second and Third Prize in previous competitions (international) who wish to compete again will be directly admitted to the second audition.

Article 3.

For the preliminary audition, the contestants must present a program (maximum duration: 20 minutes) which includes the following works:
a) Your choice of any piece by J.S. BACH.
b)
a study by CHOPIN or another composer.
c) one or two movements (depending upon the time remaining) of a Sonata by  MOZART, HAYDN or CLEMENTI or a theme with variations of the same authors.

For the second audition, the contestants must present a program (maximum duration: 40 minutes) which includes the following works:
a) a piece by SCARLATTI or by another harpsichordist except J.S.BACH.
b) One ore more compositions written in the 19th century (1800-1899).
c)
One ore more compositions of an important author written in the 20th century (1900-1999).

For the final audition, the contestants must present a program (maximum duration: 50 minutes) which includes:
a) an entire Sonata by BEETHOVEN (with the exception of Op.106) or theme with variations.
b) in the remaining time, one or more compositions by important composers of any age (freely selected by the contestants).

 

Article 4. 

The order of the performance of the selected compositions is freely decided by the contestant. A composition performed in one audition can not be performed again in another audition.
Contestants must perform by memory.
The Jury reserves the right to interrupt a contestant's performance if that performance exceeds the maximum duration allowed.

 

Article 5.

The deadline for application is September 3rd, 2008.
The application should be sent to:

The application should contain the following materials:

a) The completed entry form. The entry form may either be completed with a typewriter or in block capital letters. It must be signed. It should contain the program selected by the contestant indicating the lenght of each of the individual composition. The contestant must also indicate with whom he or she may have studied in the past 2 years. This piece of information will not be transmitted to the Jury.

b) A photocopy of the contestant's identification document (Passport, driver's license etc.) proving the contestant's age and nationality;

c) A recent photograph;

The entrance fee of € 50,00 must be payed in cash at the roll-call.

 

Article 6.

In signing the entry form, the contestant agrees to abide by all of the rules and regulations listed herein and to accept the decision of the Jury. Otherwise the contestant will be excluded from the Jury's consideration.

 

Article 7.

Contestants who are presently studing with members of the Jury or who are related or connected in any way to members of the Jury are not permitted to apply. A representative of the Associazione per il Concorso will be included on the Jury as a non-voting member.

 

Article 8.

Contestants must be present on September 8th, 2008 at 11 o'clock at the Auditorium of the "Palazzo dell'Annunziata" for the roll-call. At that time, the contestants must exhibit the original document of identification which they had previously submitted in photocopy along with their application entry form. At this time, the order of the contestant's succession during the preliminary audition will be decided by lot. The auditions will begin at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

 

Article 9.

The following prizes will be awarded:

First Prize: 3.500 euro, a silver plaque and a certificate.

2 Concert performances :

The winner is invited to perform at the American Academy in Rome

 

Second Prize: 2.000 euro, a silver plaque and a certificate.

Third Prize: 1.000 euro, a silver plaque and a certificate.

All finalists will receive a certificate mentioning the position reached in the final audition.

The first prize can not be divided "ex aequo". If the second prize is divided "ex aequo", the third prize will not be awarded but rather divided between the winners of the second prize so that each will receive 1.500 euro.
The winners will receive a contribution towards their living costs in Sulmona up to the day of the Prize Concert.
The Jury retains the right not to award a prize.


Article 10.

All prize winners must participate in the concluding concert and Prize Ceremony which will take place Sunday afternoon, September 14th, 2008 at the Auditorium of the "Palazzo dell'Annunziata". Winners who do not participate in this Prize Concert will not be awarded a prize.
The compositions to be performed by the contestants during the Prize Concert will be selected by the Jury from among those compositions which the contestants performed during the auditions. These will be selected according to importance and to public appeal.

The prize concert will be recorded live on a not for sale CD which will be given as a gift to the members of the Association for the Piano Competition, to the members of the Jury and to the prize winners.

Fabbrini
will provide the Steinway grand piano, ten upright pianos for practice, and daily piano tuning
